When Should You Seal and Stain Your Deck?

Your deck is one of the best spots to relax, host friends, or enjoy the outdoors—so it’s important to keep it looking great and protected from the elements. But when is the right time to seal and stain your deck?

1. After a New Deck Is Built

If you just had a new deck installed, give it a little time before sealing or staining—usually 4 to 12 weeks depending on the type of wood. This allows the wood to dry out and settle. Pressure-treated lumber especially needs time to lose excess moisture.

2. When the Color Fades

If your deck is starting to look dull, gray, or patchy, that’s a sign the stain has worn down and it’s time for a refresh. Typically, decks need to be re-stained every 2–3 years, though high-traffic or sun-exposed areas may need it sooner.

3. When Water No Longer Beads

A simple test: sprinkle some water on your deck. If it soaks in instead of beading on the surface, your sealant has likely worn off. Resealing at this stage helps protect the wood from water damage, rot, and warping.

4. Before Harsh Seasons

The best times to seal and stain your deck are in the spring or early fall—when temperatures are mild and there’s less rain. Sealing before summer helps shield against sun damage, while staining before winter helps prevent moisture absorption and cracking.
